‘Unicorn Returns’ — Capitol Hill carnival bar set to reopen after three-month closure

E Pike’s Unicorn will reopen just in time for Capitol Hill Christmas.

The carnival bar is slated to open Thursday for the first time since a damaging fire in July:

On October 30th, Unicorn Seattle bursts back to life… or is it back from the dead? Perfectly timed for Halloween weekend. Dust off your costumes, grab your ghouls, and come back to us after a full on resurrection.

Hilloween, of course, is one of the most wonderful times of the year for Pike/Pine’s nightlife industry.

The opening comes three months after fire destroyed the Post Options business next door.

Its owners decided to shut down permanently amid a groundswell of community support for the neighborhood business center.

Smoke and water damage during the emergency response did a number on the neighboring Unicorn and its Narwhal subterranean sibling with repairs and reopening logistics stretching out for weeks. A community fundraiser helped staff and performing artists fill some of the financial gap.

Meanwhile, Unicorn has a new neighbor on the block. While the former Post Options space waits for a new tenant, the “first Pacific Northwest store” in the global Gong cha tea cafe empire has opened at the corner of 12th and Pike.

Unicorn’s resurrection will come with some pains. The bar says it had to make some hard choices including making changes in its lineup of events and performances. One change upsetting fans is the end of the Mimosas Cabaret’s run at the E Pike bar. “Having to shut down for the unexpected amount of time we did, forced us to make many unfortunate and difficult decisions,” Unicorn said on social media about the decision, promising more information about the changes.

Despite the changes, there will still be reasons to celebrate as the Unicorn returns this week scrubbed and with a fresh coat of paint just in time for its 15th Hilloween.

The Unicorn reopens Thursday at 1118 E Pike. Learn more at unicornseattle.com.
