This new 4-way stop is not a rogue project of the Capitol Hill Department of Transportation

No, those stop signs were not another rogue project of the Capitol Hill Department of Transportation.

A new 4-way stop at 21st and John that appeared and then disappeared earlier this month is now permanently installed at this busy crossing near the Meany Middle School and Miller Playfield.

The Seattle Department of Transportation tells CHS “a miscommunication” with the Seattle Police Department led to the temporary removal.

“We’ve identified and resolved the issue,” a department spokesperson said without specifying exactly what SPD’s problem with the configuration was.

The 4-way stop improvement comes as part of SDOT’s Safe Routes to School program that has funded work on streets, sidewalks, and bike resources near Seattle’s public school campuses including Lowell Elementary and Meany on Capitol Hill.

According to SDOT reports, E John near 21st has been the site of 20 significant collisions over the last decade including seven involving injuries.

SDOT says the unofficial CHDOT efforts elsewhere on the Hill, meanwhile, could inspire permanent city-approved changes — depending on the data.
