The screen at The Egyptian hopefully won’t stay dark much longer.
A spokesperson for Seattle Central College that owns the 110-year-old former Masonic Temple building the movie theater calls home says the Capitol Hill school is currently “reviewing applications for short-term rentals and long-term leases of the Egyptian.”
“We won’t have much more to report on until those applications are evaluated,” the spokesperson said.
CHS reported earlier this month on the exit of SIFF after 10 years running the theater as the Seattle mega-nonprofit faces financial difficulties and layoffs.
The theater has been shuttered since last November when a major water leak forced its closure. SIFF was unable to reopen the theater after the repairs were completed earlier this year.
Seattle Central declined to provide information about any financial considerations in agreeing to terminate the SIFF lease but said the Egyptian has been “available for use.”
SIFF’s exit now frees the school to move forward with finding tenants to use the theater space.
The school also continues to use the five stories of the E Pine Fine Arts building for instructional space while some staff are also housed there.
