The Cliffhanger reboot hasn’t even hit theaters yet, but a sequel is already climbing into development, according to Deadline.
Producers Rocket Science and Thank You Pictures are behind the follow-up, though it’s still unclear whether the current cast or creative team will return.
The reimagining — directed by Jaume Collet-Serra — stars Lily James and Pierce Brosnan and is currently in post-production.
Brosnan takes on the role of Ray Cooper, a veteran mountaineer running a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with his daughter Sydney. Their idyllic setup turns deadly during a weekend trip with a billionaire’s son, when kidnappers strike.
James plays Naomi, Ray’s daughter, who must push past the trauma of a previous climbing accident to save her family.
James has called making the movie “exhilarating,” and the script is based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour, with the latest draft written by Melanie Toast.
The 1993 original — which grossed $255 million globally — starred Sylvester Stallone under the direction of Renny Harlin. Stallone isn’t involved in the reboot or its potential sequel.
The new Cliffhanger is aiming for a theatrical release with an IMAX rollout. Rocket Science is handling international sales while CAA Media Finance is repping North American and Chinese territories. Talks are already heating up at the TIFF market.
