House fiscal hawks are looking at the math underlying Senate Republicans’ sprawling domestic policy legislation, and they don’t like what they see. As Senate Republicans try to muscle President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” for final passage, they’re on track to violate a budget framework brokered between House fiscal hawks and Speaker Mike Johnson. Under that framework, if the GOP piles on tax cuts over $4 trillion, they’d need to match them dollar-for-dollar with additional spending cuts beyond the $1.5 trillion in the House-passed bill. “The Senate version adds $651 billion to the deficit — and that’s before interest costs,…

This story originally appeared in our Queer Issue on June 4, 2025. Photos by Madison Kirkman When I go out to low tides around Seattle, my gaydar pings incessantly. Am I imagining it? Is it wishful thinking? Or are there actually a lot of queer folks at low tides? I asked fellow queer low-tide enthusiasts, like Wendy Elisheva Somerson, who goes by Wes, if they also noticed this queer phenomenon.  “Oh, yeah, I do,” they confirmed. “You’re not making it up. There is 100 percent a connection, and there are always gaggles of queers down there.” Nearshore worker and low-tide diehard, Orian…

The Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming puberty blockers, hormones, and surgery for anyone under 18. What does that mean? The impact of this case, US v. Skrmetti, will have a tremendous impact on trans kids and their families living in the 27 states that have banned trans care in some way. Families with the means are likely to move to states where this medical care is legal. Those who can’t afford it may have no choice but to stay. The implications are serious. It’s not good by any stretch of the imagination, but the ruling itself is narrow,…

Photos by Nat Grammer At the back of Southgate Roller Rink near the skate rental area, a group of scantily clad people removed a fiberglass tile from the ceiling. The stripper pole needed to fit somehow.  Chantilly “Tilly” Tempo, the host of the first-of-its-kind Roll & Pole event, glided around to check on the progress, the light-up wheels of her skates reflecting off her white knee-high socks. She wore a brown and white gingham bra and skort and a pearl-studded ribbon swished from her ponytail. Tempo, which is her stage name, was stressed. She wanted this event to go well.…

Israel-Iran Conflict Update: Apparently, it’s over, and both countries are claiming to have “won.” As for the US’ involvement, that’s also done, and it was a big success, huge. Maybe. Marco Rubio and Trump are saying the US strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities was mission accomplished and the country is “much further away” from producing a nuclear weapon, but Trump is also acknowledging that damage “could be limited” while also saying everything was “obliterated.” Meanwhile, a preliminary classified report says the strike only set Iran’s nuclear program back a few months. I’m so tired. Everyone’s a liar. Trust no one.…
